Poe’s Birthday Show

26 Jan

Happy 200th Birthday
to Edgar Allan Poe

Original airdate: January 16, 2009

Hello and Happy Poe’s Birthday! He’s 200 today and Wordy Birds, The Edgar Allan Poe Museum, the Library of Virginia, The U.S. Post Office and most of the East Coast are celebrating (and you thought all the fuss was over the Obama inauguration).

This episode details the life Edgar Allan Poe and the misrepresentations of him. I tried to get more dirt, but my guest, Kat Spears, the Director of the Poe Museum, buried those fantasies alive. Oh well, nevermore.

In the last “chapter” of the program we get to the bottom of the Poe-in-Richmond versus Poe-in-Philadelphia competition. The only thing to say about that is, it’s not us, it’s them.

A year long schedule of the celebration of Poe’s 200th is available here: http://www.poemuseum.org/

When researching this program I found some great sites that have free audio books. The reading of “The Raven” came from http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/book.jsp?id=35. They seem like good people.

Thanks for tuning in.
